Carved jade sculpture ‘Reclining Boar’, Ming Dynasty

A jade sculpture of a reclining boar, a symbol of abundance and protection in Chinese tradition. The figure is compactly and expressively modelled, with particular attention paid to the details of the muzzle, ears and limbs. The animal is presented in an attitude of repose, with its head slightly lowered and its paws extended and placed under the body. The surface of the jade, which is cream-coloured with natural brown veins, shows patina and mineralization typical of its age. Incised lines subtly mark anatomical features and coat textures. Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) or later.
