Carved white jade figure ‘Chan Chu’, Qing dynasty

Sculpture in translucent white jade, finely carved in the form of a three-legged toad, known as Chan Chu or ‘fortune toad’. The piece features detailed work, with emphasis on the texture of the skin, simulating the characteristic bumps, and delicate incisions outlining the limbs and head. The toad holds a fruit in its mouth. The lower part of the toad has three clearly defined legs. The jade has slight natural veins, typical of the material. The polish is fine and even, giving it a smooth, silky lustre. Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) or later.
