Carved white jade figurine ‘Taihu’, Qing dynasty

Beautifully carved jade imitating the natural shape of a tall, craggy Taihu ‘太湖石’ stone. It stands out for the verticality of the composition, which starts from a narrow base that widens slightly; and for the meticulousness of the details with which the beautiful jade has been carved, creating small caves and hollows in its interior, intertwined that emulate the natural morphology of this characteristic rock. 

The Taihu stone is one of the most represented elements in Chinese culture, by artists and writers. It is set on a carved wooden base.
