George Prior" English pocket watch for the Turkish market, ca.1812.

Watch with glass top made of English 925 sterling silver. White coloured dial signed George Prior/London with black Turkish Ottoman numerals to indicate the hours. Silver gilt lance-shaped hands.

With embossed silver outer case lined with velvet. The decoration consists of floral and vegetal motifs. It has a kind of protective case made of tortoiseshell mounted in silver and another silver case lined with velvet that covers the watch. With silver chain and key.

George Prior was at the end of the 18th and 19th centuries a very well known English watchmaker on the foreign market. He was one of the leading watchmaking craftsmen working for Ottoman royalty and high society. These types of watches have an aesthetic associated with the oriental.
