Large "Spinach" Jade Brush Container, with Qianlong mark

This large and beautiful Qing dynasty (1644 and 1912) spinach jade brush container with Qianlong seal, 乾隆年制. It is cylindrical and on the exterior it is carved in half-relief with scholars in a mountainous landscape with trees, deer and pagodas. The scene is well composed, and the carving has details of great quality and naturalism, such as the step across the water. Even with its large size and weight, it demonstrates the skill required in the carving of this delicate piece. The style of the scene was inspired by traditional scroll painting, which is deeply rooted in the art of China. At the same time, the use of brush pots is associated with scholars, whose popularity was on the rise during the Qing dynasty, as the Qianlong Emperor was a lover of poetry and calligraphy.

Carved in the centre of the base is a Qianlong four-character seal 乾隆年制. The jade is deep spinach green with darker tones, and translucent. Just as this natural jade should be.

It is in excellent state of preservation.
