Yellow jade figurine “Girl with pumpkins”, Republic of China

Beautiful carved yellow jade figure, with reddish-golden spots. It shows the image of a small smiling girl, with her hair tied back, her eyes half closed and a great expression of happiness. She is standing with her legs bent, on a pile of large pumpkins and holding two more, smaller ones, in her delicate hands. A large branch and leaf cover the front of the image. 

In Chinese culture, the gourd is an element of great symbolism, where it mainly augurs luck and fortune. The figure sits on a carved wooden base.
