Ancient seal ‘Ferocious Beast’, carved from jade

Whitish jade with an ochre and reddish patina. It has a square base crowned by a carving of a mythical beast with open jaws and tense musculature. The figure is vigorously carved, highlighting the relief of the limbs and the ferocious expression. The base has incised calligraphic characters for stamping. With custom-made pedestal and box, lined with coloured fabrics. Qing dynasty (1644–1911).
