Carved jade ‘Beast Rider’, Han Dynasty

A carved jade piece in a pale celadon hue with areas of natural calcification, depicting an immortal riding a powerful mythical beast; with its front legs bent, stylised wings, and head tilted with an open mouth and horns curving backwards, it conveys a sense of fierce protection. At the front, a young or smaller beast climbs up the torso. Han Dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD) or later.
