LIVE AUCTION 10TH APRIL 2024 - 1ST SESSION - ASIAN ART

Carved jade figure, Eastern Zhou dynasty

Awarded For. -
Lot 248.
Description.

Jade carving in humanoid form. It is in a squatting posture with the hands resting on the knees, facing forward, as are the face and feet. Although the hieratic posture denotes aspects reminiscent of a human being, the facial features and the ears protruding from the head are reminiscent of a bear. Both the sides and the back of the body are decorated with incised rouleaux with great skill. Bears were animals that frequented mountains and forests, so it is common to see them depicted on grave goods. Eastern Zhou Dynasty (770-221 BC).

The jade has a brownish hue with a reddish patina due to age.

Size: 5.6 x 2.6 x 2.5 cm; Weight: 57 gr.
