Carved jade figure 'Ram', Eastern Han Dynasty

Awarded For. -
Lot 247.
Description.

A reddish-ochre-toned jade figure depicting the image of a ram lying down.

The animal is depicted in great detail, with its body curled up on a circular base. The twisted horns with engraved details stand out on the head, which leans to the right of the body. The open eyes, together with the closed mouth, have a serene expression. The slender legs ending in sharp hooves are curled at complex angles, two of them, and the other two are arranged under its own body. A delicately carved, sinuous branch emerges from the base and is inserted into the animal's mouth, as if it were alive and feeding. On the base, there are fine carved details arranged in a succession of concentric circles. Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD).

The goat in Chinese tradition is a symbol of prosperity, generosity and tranquillity due to its docile nature.
