Carved jade figure, ‘Robust Beast,’ Qing dynasty

Made of celadon jade with areas of brown and dark colouring. It depicts a mythical beast in an alert posture, standing on all four legs, with powerful musculature and vigorous zoomorphic features. The head has a fierce expression with an open mouth, revealing its teeth. The body features archaic scroll motifs in bas-relief.
