Description.

Beautiful white jade with reddish-brown spots and small dark flecks. It shows the free-standing figure of a mythological beast symbolising prosperity, resting on its four legs. The front legs are stretched out and facing forward, while the hind legs are curled up. The head rests on a long, slender neck and is turned to the right, with an intense expression, open eyes and jaws showing abundant teeth, the small ears are set at eye level, and next to them are two sharp horns. Two long, curved wings rest on the back. The tail separates from the body and curls into a beautiful spiral.  Han Dynasty (AD 206 - AD 220) or later.

The piece is remarkable for the meticulousness of the incised details and the mastery with which the jade has been carved.
