Description.
A zoomorphic sculpture carved from Hetian jade of a light celadon hue with reddish and brownish inclusions. It depicts a reclining pixiu, a mythological protective creature associated with the attraction of wealth and fortune, with a compact body, legs tucked under the body, and a powerful expression with a prominent jaw and arched eyebrows. The head is raised with a watchful gesture, while the tail curves towards the back. The relief details hinting at the mane, eyebrows, claws and stylized scrolls along the body are remarkable. The surface has a natural patina from ageing. It rests on a stand carved from dark wood. Qing dynasty (1644-1912) or later.
