Description.
White jade with a subtle patina in shades of ochre and brown. The piece features a circular openwork design depicting a winged horse or “tianma” in a dynamic pose, surrounded by swirling clouds. The openwork carving and fine bas-relief detailing the musculature, wings and flowing movement of the mane are particularly noteworthy. The winged horse symbolized spiritual ascension and connection with the celestial world. Eastern Han Dynasty (25–220 AD) or later.
