Description.
A greenish jade plaque with amber, cream and reddish patches, featuring carved and incised decorations. It has a flared shape, rounded at the bottom and ending in two large volutes. The body features four archaic dragons with sinuous, coiled bodies rendered in relief, two of which are arranged around a small ‘Bi’ symbol adorned with a grain pattern (‘谷纹’). On either side are two phoenixes, with curved beaks and long, spiralling tails. The reverse is adorned with the same scene, executed in incised decoration, featuring a single dragon positioned in the centre. Western Han Dynasty (202 BC – 9 AD) or later.
