Carved red agate disc, Zhou dynasty

Important ritual disc made of red agate. The piece, which has a flat profile, is distinguished by its uniform decoration: the entire surface is meticulously covered with a fine pattern of reliefs of volutes and lines in an archaic style. The material is an intense, translucent red colour, with natural internal bands and a fine, shiny polish. Zhou dynasty (c. 1046-256 BC). or later.
