Carved yellow jade cup ‘Dragon’, Shang dynasty
Press 'Program an autobid'in order to confirm
Made of greenish-yellow jade, with a profuse patina of ochre brown and whitish tones, it preserves traces of ritual cinnabar. The piece has a slender cylindrical body that widens slightly at the mouth and foot, decorated with an imposing openwork handle in the shape of an archaic dragon. The fine bas-relief carving covering the surface with stylised Taotie masks and geometric patterns of great technical precision is particularly noteworthy. The piece shows signs of natural erosion that attest to its age. During the Shang dynasty, these cups were high-ranking ritual objects used by the nobility in ceremonies. Shang dynasty (approx. 1600–1046 BC) or later.
