Description.
Ink and pigments on silk, showing a delicate nature scene with two mandarin ducks, a traditional symbol of marital fidelity, perched on the shore of a pond, amid calm waters and a tall bush of blossoming cotton flowers. The birds are depicted with a remarkable level of detail and vividness, their colourful feathers and harmonious postures standing out. The flowering bush rises elegantly along the vertical plane, balancing the composition. The work is signed ‘林椿’ in the right margin, and accompanied by a red seal indicating ‘林椿之印’. Lin Chun (?) was a painter active during the Ming dynasty, known for his skill in naturalistic scenes and studies of birds and flowers.
