Description.

Circular painting on silk mounted on vertical guàzhóu, depicting a serene scene with two Pekingese dogs, one black and the other white with spots, in a rocky garden next to a pink flowering bush. The depiction of the animals is detailed and realistic, with particular attention to the fur textures and expressions. The background includes rock formations, vegetation and flowers, executed with delicacy and balance. At the top right is the inscription: ‘戌辰七月 北平湛如 马晋画’, together with two stamps in red: “马晋之印” and ‘湛如’. Ma Jin (1900-1970), was a renowned painter of the Republican Era, known for his refined style in naturalistic scenes. Chinese Republican Period (1912-1949) or later.
