Engraving on paper. The scene, of profound dramatic intensity and classical rigor, depicts the lifeless body of Jesus Christ lying on a shroud, surrounded by grieving figures, among whom the Virgin Mary holding his hand, Mary Magdalene, and Joseph of Arimathea can be distinguished. At Christ's feet, cherubs can be seen next to the instruments of the Passion, such as the crown of thorns. In the background, a somber nocturnal landscape under a stormy sky reveals the silhouette of Golgotha with its crosses and fortified architecture. The engraving stands out for its remarkable technical mastery of chiaroscuro, modeling the volumes with rich tonal gradations. It is a later copy of the original by Jean Boulanger (1606-1680) after the work of Sébastien Bourdon (1616-1671). The inscriptions "J. Boulanger sculp." and "F. Poilly ex. Cum Pri. Regis" are engraved in the lower right corner.
