Gongshi rock with wooden base, Qing dynasty

Natural sculpture, known as scholar's rock (gongshi), placed on a custom-made dark wood pedestal. The main piece is made of a dark, almost black material with a subtle metallic sheen. Its surface is extremely irregular and textured, with cavities and ridges. Its abstract, vertical form evokes a miniature mountain landscape, much appreciated in the aesthetics of scholars.
