Description.
Carved in white Hetian jade, depicting a Buddhist lion (also known as shíshī) in a watchful stance, its body reclining on sturdy paws and its head tilted, holding a lingzhi branch, accompanied by a young lion playing between its paws. The piece has been handcrafted with great attention to detail, highlighting the rounded shapes, finely incised fur, and curved forms that lend dynamism to the composition. The jade has a homogeneous creamy-white hue with slight natural inclusions. Its surface has been polished to a satiny lustre that accentuates the translucent quality of the material. Qing Dynasty (1644–1912) or later.
