Hetian white jade sculpture ‘Mythical Beast’, Qing dynasty

Zoomorphic sculpture in white Hetian jade, representing a fantastical creature with a reclining body, sturdy legs and an upright head with an energetic expression. The mane and tail are carved with undulating incisions that accentuate the movement. The jade, with a uniform tone and slight natural veins, has areas of ochre patina that have been used in the carving. It is kept in a custom-made box lined with fabric.
