Description.
A monumental handwritten and illuminated album of the Buddhist sutra Bao Gang Jing (宝刚经), bound in an accordion-fold or folding-screen format with covers lined with blue silk. The inner leaves, made of a warm-toned silk with a period patina, feature columns of calligraphy in black ink with firm strokes, alternating with tempera paintings and mineral pigments depicting Buddhist deities. The colophon at the end dates the transcription to the twenty-fifth year of the Kaiyuan era (开元二十五年, 737 AD) and names Shi Weize (史维则) as the calligrapher. Tang Dynasty (618–907) or later.
