Description.
Jadeite tablet, trapezoidal with a pointed tip, Gui style, made of pale green jadeite with attractive emerald spots and natural ochre veins. The piece features a meticulously decorated surface on both sides using the technique of fine engraving and gilding. It depicts a scene of an imperial five-clawed dragon winding its way through stylized clouds above a sea of raging waves. The reverse side features a long incised poem.
Pieces of this type were objects of the highest prestige, symbolizing the legitimacy and heavenly mandate of the emperor. Qing dynasty (1644–1912).
