Description.
A white jade carving depicting the monk Bodhidharma, the central figure of Buddhism, accompanied by two lions. The group is seated on a base of finely chiselled ruyi clouds in spirals, a symbol of spiritual transcendence. Bodhidharma is shown with his characteristic bushy beard and prominent eyebrows, dressed in a robe with wide sleeves. Next to him are carved in great detail a lion in a dynamic pose and a jovial-looking infant figure. The piece is distinguished by its compact volume, deep relief carving and intentional use of areas of dark jade patina to emphasise the composition. Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) or later.
