Jade pendant with gold filigree setting, Warring States period

Awarded For. -
Lot 198.
Description.

Carved white jade with openwork and bas-relief decorations and a fine yellow-gold filigree running around the perimeter of the piece. With a delicate and fine profile, it has an elongated and curved central area with a small hole in the centre; around it are multiple openwork decorations of scrolls, phoenixes and kui which are in turn adorned with lines, circumferences and scrolls of gem-set gold.

Originally, these pieces were intended to be rings, where the thumb was inserted into the central hole and the curved end was used to place and tighten the rope. Over the centuries, these pieces acquired a more complex style and were used as ornaments or decorative elements hanging from clothing as a symbol of power and status.  Combatant Kingdoms period ( 403 - 222 BC) or later.
