Description.
Celadon-coloured jade ritual pendant, decorated using the semi-precious stone inlay technique. The piece depicts a taotie mask carved in relief with large eyes, a broad nose, prominent teeth and stylised horns. It stands out for its use of natural turquoise tesserae set into the grooves of the design to highlight the facial features. It shows patina due to its age. Shang Dynasty (c. 1600-1046 BC).
