Jade walking stick handle, ‘Beast’, Hongshan culture

Dark green jade, with a patina in shades of ochre, brown and orange, bearing witness to its age. It depicts the head of a wild beast with its jaws open, prominent fangs and a fierce gaze. It is notable for its meticulous details, such as the mane and the muzzle, all carved with great skill. It features a central hole designed to fit the shaft of a staff, as well as small holes to secure it in place. Hongshan culture (approx. 4700–2900 BC) or later.
