Description.
Circular box with wooden lid. Made using the technique of carved cinnabar lacquer. Both sides are masterfully decorated; one side features a scene of two ferocious lions chasing a sphere adorned with brocade and ribbons, in the midst of a stormy sea, surrounded by clouds and small flowers. The other shows a fierce Qilin with an imposing gaze surrounded by fish and fruits that form a frame around it. The interior and base contrast with their smooth, shiny black lacquer finish. Qing Dynasty (1644-1912), 18th century or later.
