Description.
Deep blue carved lapis lazuli with natural brown and gold inclusions. The scene depicts a traditional mountain setting, with a group of scholars conversing beside a winding path, hidden by pine trees and rock formations. Architectural elements such as pavilions and stairways blend into the landscape. The trees, likely pines and plum trees, are sculpted in painstaking detail, as are the garments of the human figures. The piece suggests an atmosphere of spiritual contemplation. The piece rests on a carved wooden base with stylized waves, rocailles, and scrolls. Qing Dynasty (1644–1912) or later.
