Ni Gengye (1900–1965) ‘Young Chinese Woman,’ mid-20th century

Watercolour and pigments on paper. It depicts a half-length portrait of a young woman in a delicate pose, holding a bouquet of white flowers to her chest. She wears a period wavy hairstyle and Art Deco earrings, emphasising the cosmopolitanism of the upper-middle class in the mid-20th century. It has been cropped on both sides to remove references to tobacco. Signed and stamped in the lower right corner.
