Office suite of General Francisco Franco, ca. 1960

Exceptional Thai-made desk set, notable for its intricate niello decoration featuring Buddhist deities and plant motifs on a dark background. Presented in a purple velvet case.

This writing set was a gift from the royal house or the Government of Thailand to General Francisco Franco. The case has a silver label that reads: To His Excellency General Francisco Franco, Chief of the State, With sincere respect for his valor and resoluteness in restoring the unity of the ancient and courageous Spanish nation, Madrid. 1960. (To His Excellency General Francisco Franco, Head of State, with sincere respect for his courage and determination in restoring the unity of the ancient and courageous Spanish nation, Madrid. 1960)

It belonged to General Francisco Franco's office in the Prado Palace during the 1960s, until it was given as a gift by Colonel José Segoviano Gómez to the father of the current owner.

Attached is a photo of a similar gift from His Majesty King Bhumibol (King of Thailand) to the President of the United States. Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1960.
