Description.
Pair of finely carved circular medallions in white Heitian jade, evenly toned, smooth and slightly translucent. Each medallion features on the obverse side a relief design of a traditional lion playing with an embroidered ball (xiùqiú), surrounded by auspicious clouds. The reverse of both medallions is decorated with a calligraphic inscription in seal style and stylised vegetal motifs at the top. The rim of the discs is slightly contoured, with lobes marking the cardinal points. The high-quality jade has a polished finish that emphasises the smoothness of the material and its ceremonial character. Qing dynasty (1644-1912) or later.
