Press 'Program an autobid'in order to confirm
The work belongs to the Orientalist movement, capturing a scene of great narrative power featuring a dark-skinned Berber or Tuareg horseman riding a camel in the foreground. The figure is enveloped in a thick robe or djellaba in ochre tones and wears a white turban, carrying a traditional rifle or musket over his shoulder. In the background, beneath a sky of low clouds and dense brushstrokes, unfolds a panoramic view of the city of Tangier, highlighting a monumental fortified brick gate, a slender minaret, and a bustling market or souk with sketched figures. The painting stands out for its rich, impasto brushwork, the use of thick impasto, and a vibrant palette of ochres, earth tones, and golds that evoke the atmosphere of North Africa. Signed and inscribed by the artist in the lower right corner: "P. Alcayne / Tangier". The piece is presented framed in a sumptuous period frame in carved and gilded wood with profuse plant motifs and borders of egg-and-dart relief.
