Sancai-glazed ceramic ‘Lady’, Tang dynasty

Polychrome-glazed terracotta (sancai), depicting a court lady in a seated position. The figure wears a long blue skirt decorated with floral motifs and a shoulder-strapped jacket. She is holding a small bird in her hands. The unglazed face has delicate, serene features, with traces of pigment on the lips. She wears a striking headdress in the shape of a phoenix. The base is hollow. Tang Dynasty (618–907) or later.
