Set of carved jades ‘Ornamental elements for hilt’, Han style
Press 'Program an autobid'in order to confirm
A set of four finely carved jade pieces for the hilt and scabbard of a ceremonial sword. The pieces feature various motifs of coiled dragons and geometric patterns, symbols of power and protection. The larger, rectangular piece would correspond to a hilt tip, decorated with a dragon in high relief surrounded by auspicious clouds. The trapezoidal and band-shaped pieces, with perforations, would have served as connecting elements or ornamental reinforcement. The circular piece, decorated in relief with dots and concentric lines, would have served as a knob or hilt, with holes that allowed it to be held securely in place. The jade has a surface patina and dark mineralisation, characteristic of its age.
