Description.

Oil on canvas. Depiction of the miracle in which the Virgin Mary descends from heaven to reward the devotion of Saint Ildefonso by placing a celestial chasuble upon him. The work represents this miraculous passage from traditional Spanish hagiography with a pyramidal composition of distinctly Baroque and Counter-Reformation character. In the central plane, Saint Ildefonso of Toledo is shown kneeling with his hands in prayer, dressed in a white alb with ample folds. Above him, the Virgin Mary descends in celestial glory surrounded by dense dark clouds and sketched cherubs, placing the rich chasuble, embroidered with gold threads and reddish tones, upon the saint's shoulders with the assistance of an angel. Accompanying the composition, several angels and cherubs attend the sacred act, delicately holding the rich fabrics of the mantle and illuminating the dimness of the church with a golden radiance of mystical origin. The lighting treatment projects a beam of golden, celestial light that pierces the gloom and illuminates the main figures, lending a solemn and mystical air to the scene. It stands out for its imposing dimensions and as a valuable period painting that has undergone previous restorations.
