Description.
Two-coloured carved jade vase, double gourd or ‘hulu’ shaped with a circular base. It combines spinach green jade for the main body and white jade for the decorative medallion appliqués. The decoration features a dense and deep background carved in openwork relief on the green jade with patterns of floral scrolls, leaves and vines. In the bulbous upper and lower sections, the body is interrupted by eight large circular inlays of carved white jade, each displaying, as a central element, one of the symbols of good fortune or ‘Ashta Mangala’. The base is made of carved wood with openwork plant motifs. Qing dynasty (1644–1912).
