White Hetian jade figure, ‘Landscape with Horseman’, Qing dynasty

White jade figure with orange inclusions. The piece is sculpted in the shape of a mountain, centred on a scene depicting a water buffalo advancing between crags, accompanied by a dog and guided by a rider, set against a landscape of ancient pine trees and rock formations carved in different levels of relief. The motifs convey an expression of great serenity and harmony with nature. It rests on a carved wooden base with wave and rock motifs that give continuity to the landscape. Qing dynasty (1644–1911)
