Description.
A white Hetian jade figurine, carved from a single block of pure jade with reddish-golden flecks. The set comprises a horse and a monkey. The animal is reclining, with its head resting on one leg and facing forwards. On one side, there is a monkey clinging to the horse’s mane. The details are particularly striking for their delicacy and naturalistic poses. Carved jade animals were most popular from the Song Dynasty through to the Qing Dynasty. They served a variety of purposes: as paperweights, pendants or ‘toys’ for scholars. In very good condition. Qing Dynasty (1644–1912) or later.
