Description.
Important ritual plaque of white jade, carved in relief. The piece is dominated by the representation of a Taotie mask, a motif associated with protection. The carving shows large circular eyes, stylised horns and a broad smile revealing sharp teeth. The piece is ivory white with inclusions and veins of golden patina. Shang Dynasty (c. 1600-1046 BC). or later.
