White jade 'Phoenix' seal, Western Han dynasty

Description.

White jade seal with reddish-golden stains produced by natural ageing of the stone. The base of the seal is square, and above it is the figure of a well-drawn phoenix. The face, which looks to one side, is composed of wide-set, bulging eyes, a sharp, curved beak, small ears and a long crest. The body rests on a broad tail and sharp, muscular forelegs. On the back are two large feather coverts which curl up at the end. The details are elaborately engraved and decorate the pedestal with images of animals surrounded by ruyi clouds. In very good condition with signs of patina due to age. Western Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 8) or later.
