White jade plaque "Ladies in the Garden", Qing Dynasty

Description.

Carved white jade plaque. Rectangular in shape and with a good profile. It is carved on both sides and depicts, on the obverse side, scrolls and incised designs on the upper part. Framed within a narrow rectangle is a scene depicted in a moonlit garden where two beautiful ladies are surprised by a gallant who climbs up a tree in order to get over the garden wall and admire the beauty of the two courtesans. On the reverse, there is a large relief inscription signed by the author in the lower left-hand part of the text. This is framed in the centre and enhanced by the same head as the obverse. The carving is of great quality and technique. Qing dynasty (1644 - 1912).

The piece is accompanied by a beautiful decorated box.
