Description.
White jade seal with reddish-gold spots produced by the natural ageing of the stone. The base of the seal is square, and on top of it stands the figure of a beautifully represented phoenix. The face, which looks to one side, is composed of bulging, open eyes, a sharp, curved beak, small ears and a long crest. The body rests on a broad tail and sharp, muscular front legs. On the back are two large feathered covers that curl at the ends. The details are engraved and decorate the pedestal with images of animals surrounded by ruyi clouds. In very good condition with signs of patina due to age. Western Han Dynasty (206 BC - 25 AD) or later.
