White quartz “Turtle” pendant, Eastern Zhou dynasty

Translucent quartz with subtle inclusions of red cinnabar. It depicts a tortoise with its head tilted to one side and its limbs tucked beneath its shell. It is notable for its intricate decoration, carved in relief with stylised cloud and scroll motifs combined with a geometric pattern. It shows signs of wear due to age. Eastern Zhou Dynasty (771–256 BC) or later.
