Description.
Ceremonial sceptre (牙璋), carved from an elongated slab of olive-green jade, with dense reddish patinas. The piece comprises three sections: the main blade, straight in shape with bevelled edges, tapering to a concave, bifurcated tip; the handle, flanked by two openwork, serrated projections which frame a stylised, incised Taotie mask; and the tang, rectangular in cross-section with a perforation. Shang Dynasty (c. 1600–1046 BC) or later.
