Description.
Carved yellow jade with areas of ochre colouring. The piece depicts a water buffalo at rest, with its limbs bent beneath its body. The beast is covered with incised patterns of lines and scrolls in an archaic style, with the head standing out, featuring large horns curved backwards and a thick snout. It shows patina due to its age. Western Zhou Dynasty (c. 1046–771 BC) or later.
