Description.
Exceptional sculpture carved in the round from yellow jade with natural earthy alterations in ochre and brown tones. It represents the powerful mythological beast known as the ‘Dragon Turtle’ (龍龜), with a robust body, tilted head with marked jaws and prominent eyes. The shell is meticulously engraved with the classic hexagonal pattern. On its back, a small serpentine beast in an archaic style slithers in low relief. The legs, firmly planted, are carved with defined claws. Warring States period (475-221 BC).
