Yellow jade sword ornaments ‘Dragon and Phoenix’, Han dynasty

Crafted from exceptional yellow jade, with a honey-coloured patina and traces of red pigment adhering to the reliefs. The set comprises the four classic pieces:
The head (首), circular in shape, decorated with a coiled dragon in openwork high relief; the guard (镡), rhomboidal in cross-section, carved with motifs of intertwined dragons and phoenixes on both sides; the sheath pin (璏): elongated rectangular in shape, with a central opening for the belt and decorated with stylised phoenixes; and the tip (珌), trapezoidal in shape, with a complex design of openwork reliefs. This type of ornamental set is a supreme symbol of military and social rank at court. Han dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD) or later.
